FLEMSPA wishes to recognize Captain Don Irving for his selection as the 2009 Florida EMS Pilot of the year.  Captain Irving serves as the base safety pilot for the ShandsCair Flight Program and is employed by Air Methods Corp.Captain Irving's selection is based in part for his performance during an in flight event where a large bird struck the helicopter that he was flying.  This incident occurred at night while the helicopter was at approximately 700 ft. and 175 mph and preparing to land.During the event, the bird shattered the pilot's windshield partially striking Captain Irving, and continued into the patient compartment.  The collision also broke Captain Irving's glasses rendering him unable to see out of one eye for the landing. It is great pride that the Board and it's members present this award to Captain Irving.CONGRATULATIONS!
